Statement from the State Senate Republican Caucus:

Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) says the defeat of Proposition 29 portends nothing but trouble ahead for the budget plan finalized just yesterday by Governor Jerry Brown and the legislature’s Democrat leaders. The budget plan relies on the unreliable assumption that voters will pass the Governor’s sales and income tax increase plan in November.

“Make no mistake about it, when California voters turn down a tax on smokers, with the proceeds purportedly dedicated to cancer research no less, how seriously can we take any budget that relies on voters passing a tax increase on themselves come November,” questioned Senate Republican Leader Huff. “But that’s exactly what Governor Brown and the legislative Democrats are literally counting on.”

Republican lawmakers presented an alternative budget plan that protected program funding for K-12 schools and California’s public colleges and universities without raising taxes. Democrats voted against that plan.
